In 22 years, he has performed over 3300 jumps in Australia and overseas. But Cunningham said being acutely aware of the risks is the best protection against complacency and, ultimately, death. "The potential dangers are very real and very obvious," he said, "but if I thought I was going to die every time I stepped off, I wouldn't do it. ". This week, Australia's tight-knit BASE community lost one of its beloved members. Lucky Chance, a 31-year-old formerly known as Toby Benham, died after hitting a ledge in swing jump known as the "death swing" at Hanging Rock in the Blue Mountains. "When there's a death in the community it hits people reasonably hard. I've lost numerous friends," said John, a Sydney-based BASE jumper, who declined to give his surname. "You've just got to remind yourself that the very people who do this sort of sport, they're the ones who make life worthwhile. Although Lucky wasn't BASE jumping at the time, his death revived the tension between the risk-takers and the authorities who want them to stop. On Wednesday, Superintendent Darryl Jobson said his death was a tragic reminder that high risk activities, "which can result in serious or fatal injuries" are "prohibited from being undertaken in national parks". In NSW, where there are about 30 to 40 active BASE jumpers, those who avoid the national parks for the cities run the risk of prosecution for trespass. A further offence for those caught "abseiling, jumping or parachuting from any part of a building or other structure" carries a potential penalty of three months imprisonment. Compared with Europe and North America where there are now a plethora of legal jumping sites, Australia is renowned among the world BASE jumping community for its stringent approach. But prohibition has only forced the community underground, Cunningham said, and the fear of legal consequences, particularly among new jumpers, had seen people take unnecessary risks to avoid authorities. "They get all in a panic that their futures are ruined, they might get charged with something if someone has died, so they call rescue but they don't hang around to help," he said. "I've seen people with a broken ankle go through hell to get out just to avoid detection. John said jumpers were also reluctant to call authorities when accidents occurred because they were frequently threatened with hefty rescue bills, a tactic he maintained wasn't levelled against other users of national parks. "If you fell off that cliff because you were bushwalking or abseiling they don't try to charge you or force you to wear the costs. Both men maintained that while the sport was risky, the media spotlight on fatalities fuelled the perception it was more deadly than it is. . "The amount of incidents that happen BASE jumping are fairly minor. There might be one death every few years. Compare that with the number of bushwalkers who go missing," Cunningham said. After more than two decades jumping across the world, Cunningham said he remained hopeful Australian authorities would adopt a more enlightened approach, but maintained BASE jumping would continue "no matter what. "It's against your raw instincts to jump off something very high. But once you jump you love it, it becomes a real passion.
